Program Vision:

Excellence in preparing a veterinarian capable of competing in the fields of veterinary medical sciences, especially equine medicine and surgery, at the local and regional levels and in light of international quality standards.


Program mission

Through this distinguished program, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University, is committed to graduate a qualified veterinarian with high and distinguished skills in the fields of equine medicine, surgery and reproductive medicine, as well as its care, breeding, feeding and maintaining its health from various diseases in line with the requirements of the local and regional labor market within the framework of professional ethics.


Objectives of the program:

In addition to the general program objectives, the Distinct Program in equine medicine and surgery aims to:

  1. Providing a program that serves the requirements of the local and regional labor market and meets its growing needs in the field of equine medicine and surgery in light of international quality standards.
  2. Graduation of a veterinarian capable of applying skills and knowledge in the field of equine medicine and surgery (horses, donkeys, and mules) by studying the distinguished courses of these animals, their breeding, care, behavior and dealing with them in fields, stables, governmental and police hospitals, and sports clubs.
  3. Preparing a veterinarian who is able and efficiently to identify the various diseases that affect these animals and the modern diagnostic methods and the most appropriate treatment regimens for them through scientific study and practical and field exercises.
  4. Accurate scientific identification of the various immunization programs and common diseases that are transmitted from the equine species to humans, how to prevent them, and the guiding measures required to limit their spread.
  5. Preparing and training highly skilled veterinary medical cadres and distinguished techniques in the field of horses who can work in government horse hospitals, private clinics, zoos and research institutes.
  6. Introducing the system of critical care medicine, emergency medicine and intensive care in the field of the equine family.
  7. Developing students' skills and abilities for creativity, innovation and scientific thinking through distinguished field learning and training in veterinary sites specialized in this field.
  8. Creating new job opportunities in the veterinary field and that the graduates of this program are able to compete and deal with partners interested in this field locally and regionally.

Program Advantages:

  1. Ensuring the graduation of veterinarians who are fully conversant with the basics of science related to the equine species and distinguished qualified veterinarians with special experiences that enable them to diagnose and treat diseases affecting the equine species, provide the required consultations, and maintain the quality of service and the laws and ethics of the profession.
  2. This program is characterized by graduating a veterinarian with the ability to know the various preparations, drugs and immunizations of the equine species, their pharmacological effect and side effects.
  3. Studying and applying the principles and methods of animal welfare so that the graduate becomes familiar with the behaviors of the equine family, methods of breeding and feeding them, and diseases resulting from malnutrition, as well as zoonotic diseases between them and humans and ways of dealing with them.
  4. The program has been designed to guarantee a veterinarian with special abilities in this field to become an opportunity for institutions working in the field of equine, such as the Ministries of Interior and Defense, the General Authority for Veterinary Services, clinics, hospitals and private farms.

Bachelor's degree requirements

(Bachelor of Veterinary Medical Sciences - distinct in Equine Medicine and Surgery)

To obtain a bachelor's degree, success in:

A - All compulsory courses (69) courses equivalent to (181) credit hours.

B - Elective courses (6 courses) equivalent to 9 credit hours.

C- Passing the training programs in attendance, training, and an examination, and accepting the graduation research.

The general grade in the bachelor’s degree is calculated on the basis of the cumulative grade for the grades obtained by the student in all the compulsory and elective courses he studied.


Registration Terms

Semester courses (first or second) are registered with a minimum of 12 credit hours and a maximum of 25 credit hours. The summer semester can also be registered with a maximum of 12 credit hours. The student applies for course registration if he meets the registration requirements for each course, the most important of which is success in the eligible courses. Consultation with the academic advisor, on the specific dates, timing of registration and its rules, which are issued by the College Council annually and published in the Student’s Handbook. Registration is not considered final until after paying the educational service dues scheduled for each semester.


Terms of modification, cancellation and suspension of registration

The student has the right to change courses in which he was registered with others within two weeks of the start of study in both the first and second semesters, taking into account the conditions of registration. The student has the right to stop enrollment or withdraw from a course within 3 weeks at most, and the value of the financial dues will not be refunded after that. As for the summer semester, the student has the right to withdraw from the courses within two weeks at most, without prejudice to the minimum registration hours.
